Red Bull Racing F1 driver Max Verstappen reflected on breaking yet another record during the 2023 Mexico City Grand Prix at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.
Starting from the third place on the grid, Max Verstappen overtook Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz already before the first corner.
The Flying Dutchman then pulled the comfortable gap on everybody crossing the finish line with a 13-second lead over Lewis Hamilton in second place and a 23-second lead over Leclerc in third.
Consequently, Verstappen achieved a record-breaking 16th win in the same season. The 26-year-old told the media after the race in Mexico City:
"The pace of the car was very good today, we were planning to do a different strategy to everyone else but unfortunately we couldn't show that with the red flag."
Verstappen had a 22-second lead over Charles Leclerc in the second place when Kevin Magnussen crashed. He explained he thought the performance of his Red Bull was even better than the results showed.
"Nevertheless, we were very strong on the hard tyres at the end. To win 16 races in a season is something I never thought would be possible, this season has been unbelievable."
The Dutchman also acknowledged the first-lap incident, which put his teammate Sergio Perez out of the race. Perez previously named the Mexico City Grand Prix the most important race for him.
"I understand from Checo's side why he went for it at the beginning, it would have been incredible for him to be on the podium at his home race here in Mexico."
Verstappen is already focused on the sprint weekend in Sao Paulo this week. The race was dominated by Mercedes last year, but the Red Bull driver will be looking to prolong his streak of wins this season to 17.
"Thankfully the crowd stayed, and they've been amazing all weekend, I've felt so welcome here as I always do. For now, my head is already on to the next race, let's see what we can do in Brazil."
