Red Bull's
Max Verstappen gave his two cents on
Fernando Alonso's recent contract extension with
Aston Martin.
Fernando Alonso reportedly had a few options, and he admitted he talked to multiple teams, but in the end, he
decided to sign an extension with Aston Martin at least until the end of the 2026 season.
The 42-year-old was rumored to be a candidate for
Sergio Perez's seat in
Red Bull, and Max Verstappen previously said he would "find it weird" if the Austrian team signed him.
However, he didn't find weird Aston Martin's decision to extend the double World Champions contract. He told the media:
"No, but I don't have all the insights. They have a good relationship with each other as well and you don't know what they're talking about in the meantime and how the prospects are, so it's very difficult for me to really comment about it."
"Clearly, they are very ambitious, they want to win in F1. He believes in the project so that it makes sense to sign."
Aston Martin's team owner,
Lawrence Stroll, made significant investments in the latest cutting-edge technology, a new wind tunnel, and a whole factory next to the
Silverstone Circuit.
Moreover, the team will enter into a partnership with Honda and exclusively supply power units from the Japanese manufacturer from the start of 2026.
Aston will have everything they need to compete for the Championship in 2026. The only thing that remains is using it to build the quickest car.
In 2026, Alonso will turn 45. As to whether the triple World Champion could see himself still racing in F1 at that age, he said:
"Fernando took a bit of time out [at the end of 2018], and then found his love again to be fully competitive in Formula 1."
"It’s very difficult to comment on these kind of things. I don’t think I will be here until I’m 45, but you never know."
