Max Verstappen had a record-breaking 2023 Formula One season, and he was once again nominated for the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award.
Laureus World Sports Awards are some of the most popular awards in the world of sports. Every year, athletes in multiple different categories are recognized, with the two most prestigious being the World Sportsman of the Year and World Sportswoman of the Year.
Many F1 drivers were voted as the World Sportsman of the Year before, as legendary
Michael Schumacher won the award in 2002 and 2004, while his fellow seven-time World Champion,
Lewis Hamilton, won the award in 2020 alongside Lionel Messi.
Also, one former
Red Bull driver received the award when
Sebastian Vettel was voted the World Sportsman of the Year in 2014. Verstappen already has one award in his trophy collection, which he won in 2022, and he was among the nominees also last year.
Now, the Dutch driver was nominated for the third consecutive year, and he will be certainly one of the top favourites to win the award, given how incredibly successful was his 2023 season with Red Bull.
Verstappen, who was
beaten to the Dutch Sportsman of the Year award and also
didn't win the European Sportsperson of the Year award, was nominated for the Laureus Awards among some of the best athletes in the world.
The five other nominated athletes are two-time winner and eight-time nominee, Lionel Messi, Norwegian football player, Erling Haaland, who got his first nomination, Swedish athlete Mondo Duplantis, who was nominated for the third time.
Also, American runner Noah Lyles received the first nomination, and 24-time Grand Slam tennis champion Novak Djokovic, who is the second most successful person in the history of the award, winning it four times, is also among the nominees.
Verstappen will be hoping that his historic season will be enough to clinch this award, even though he has plenty already in his collection.
