Red Bull Racing driver
Max Verstappen stated in a recent interview he does not need more competition in F1 to get the best out of himself.
The 2022 and 2023 seasons will go down as two years dominated by Austrian team Red Bull Racing and the Dutchman driver Max Verstappen.
Few other drivers before Verstappen, like
Lewis Hamilton or
Sebastian Vettel, had their own era in F1. In the beginning, all the fans wanted them to beat the reigning World Champion, but as they became one, fans started turning against them.
The 26-year-old is starting to experience this situation. People are getting tired of seeing the same person on the top step of the podium during 19 out of 22 races of the season.
Even though
Formula One has been closer in 2023 than ever before, there is not as much excitement around the sport when there is no battle for the Championship.
On the other hand, it is not Verstappen's problem to care about what fans want and don't want to see. The triple World Champion is in F1 to win, and he will continue for as long as he can.
The 26-year-old acknowledged it is more exciting to see battle for the first place. On the other hand, he looks at his own performances and suggests he does not need anybody to get the best out of himself. He told the media:
"For F1, you would like to see more competition, but for me, I don't need any other team or like a team-mate to get the best out of myself."
Verstappen showed during the seven remaining races of the season that came after he secured the championship that he does not lack motivation to continue winning. He won all of them. The Dutchman added:
"I'm putting a lot of pressure on myself to always try and be the best I can, try to prepare in the best possible way. That's what I enjoy, and that's the only thing that I really look at."
