Lawrence Barretto recently delivered an update on the situation in the driver market, suggesting Carlos Sainz is "definitely under consideration" at Red Bull.
We are approaching the fifth race weekend of the 2024 season, and Scuderia Ferrari F1 driver Carlos Sainz is still without a contract for next year.
Since the Grand Prix in Japan, Fernando Alonso has signed a new deal with Aston Martin, which means the 29-year-old is probably no longer an option.
While it is suggested that Audi really wants the Spaniard, he might want to join either Mercedes or Red Bull because these teams have a higher chance of delivering him a championship-competing car.
Last week, rumors emerged suggesting Sainz was very close to signing a deal with Mercedes, but nothing has been confirmed or announced since then.
It seems the Spanish driver is currently the biggest player in the driver market, and according to F1.com's Lawrence Barretto, Red Bull is strongly considering him.
"Multiple sources say Red Bull have spoken to Team Sainz about a return to the Red Bull family he left during the 2017 season to join Renault."
"He's definitely under consideration, but Red Bull haven't decided if pairing him up with Verstappen again (they were teammates in their respective debut seasons in 2015) is a good idea."
Following yet another fantastic performance by Sainz in Japan, Red Bull's Helmut Marko said, "Sainz is certainly a name to consider."
The only problem for the Spaniard might be that Sergio Perez has improved his performance significantly, and Red Bull seems satisfied with how he's been doing so far. Barreto added:
"As it stands, Horner insists Checo "has the priority" and sources say that he has gained considerable kudos within the team in the way he's approached the start of this year, which in turn has pushed him higher up in Red Bull's thinking."
