Various reports that emerged over the last two days suggest that Carlos Sainz either already signed with Mercedes or has a serious offer on the table.
On April 11th, the driver market finally started moving, with Fernando Alonso officially announcing a contract extension with his current team, Aston Martin.
The 42-year-old was rumored to be an option for both Mercedes and Red Bull, but in the end, decided to sign a "multi-year" deal with Aston.
This potentially closed on doors for Carlos Sainz; Motorsport.com reported not too long ago that "factions within Aston Martin" were interested in signing the current Ferrari driver instead of Alonso.
However, that won't happen now, as the older Spaniard already has a contract in his hand. This left Sainz with options such as Mercedes, Red Bull, or Sauber.
It was speculated that Sauber (future Audi) was the team most interested in the 29-year-old and was putting pressure on him to decide whether he wanted to sign with them within the next few weeks.
However, as @MercedesNewsUK (on Twitter) reports, multiple Italian publications suggest that the deal between the Spaniard and Silver Arrows is either very close to happening or has already gone through.

What is important to note is that nothing has been confirmed so far. But if this became true, it would be huge and surprising news.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff asserted he was waiting for Max Verstappen to decide whether he wanted to leave Red Bull.
The Austrian team principal asserted he was in no hurry to make a decision, and it was understood that Andrea Kimi Antonelli was his priority after the triple World Champion.
If he signed Carlos Sainz for the next season or two, the 17-year-old F2 driver would most probably head to Williams.
