According to a recent report, Fernando Alonso is set to join Red Bull and replace Sergio Perez for the season 2025.
The driver market is in full swing at the moment. More than half of the drivers on the grid are still not sure about where they are going to be racing next season.
One of the biggest players on the market at the moment is Fernando Alonso. He has previously been connected to Mercedes but is now suggested to be interested in a possible move to Red Bull.
Former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher recently said that the team principal of the team from Milton Keynes, Christian Horner, is a "very, very big fan" of the Spanish Matador and would like to get him onboard for 2025.
Now, F1-Insider.com reports that the 42-year-old is currently a preferred candidate for the team principal of the Austrian team. F1-Insider.com wrote:
"Two-time World Champion Fernando Alonso (42) is set to become teammate to superstar Max Verstappen (26) next year, replacing the Mexican Sergio Perez."
"The Spaniard is the preferred candidate of the current 'sole ruler' Christian Horner, who has the unconditional support of the Thai majority shareholders."
This rumor comes at the same time that former F1 team manager Peter Windsor suggested something completely different. He said various reliable sources told him Perez has already extended his contract with the team.
That would seem like a strange move for Red Bull, which wanted to see an improvement in the Mexican's performance before deciding whether to keep him.
F1 Insider didn't mention anything about Checo's possible contract extension in their report. On the contrary, Verstappen has reportedly already been informed that he should expect Alonso as his teammate next year.
"The Verstappen camp is already aware of which teammate they can expect in 2025 and must now think about their own future."
