Former F1 team manager Peter Windsor suggested he's heard from "pretty reliable" sources that
Sergio Perez has already signed a contract for next year.
Sergio Perez's contract with
Red Bull expires at the end of this season. This means that the year 2024 and the performances that Checo shows now might be the most important in his career so far.
In the season's first two races, Red Bull was clearly the fastest car. It wasn't so evident
during the third race, but the fact remains that any other team from Red Bull would be a step down for the Mexican driver.
Red Bull bosses
Christian Horner and
Helmut Marko were quite open about saying they might consider Perez for the next season if he performs well. But on the other hand, they also have enough candidates with whom they could replace the 34-year-old.
Marko previously stated he would make the decision about the second seat in the team from Milton Keynes sometime around the summer break.
While that is still quite a few races away, Peter Windsor suggested on his
YouTube channel that the decision has already been made, and Perez has signed an extension for the 2025 season.
"I heard in the paddock area from various sources that are pretty reliable that Sergio's already renewed his contract for next year."
"In which case, you would say, well what was the rush? A bit like Lando re-signing for McLaren, a long-term deal, what was the rush, you would say that about Red Bull with Sergio Perez as well. If that's the case, then that door is obviously closed for Carlos Sainz."
However, it is essential to note that nothing has been confirmed by Red Bull or the driver himself. At the same time, former F1 driver
Ralf Schumacher suggests Horner is very keen on bringing Fernando Alonso on board.
The whole situation is very messy, but it would seem strange for Red Bull to rush Perez's contract with so many alternatives.
