Formula One driver
Sergio Perez reflected on his worst moment of the 2023 season - the
Qatar Grand Prix weekend at
Lusail International Circuit.
One of the most difficult moments for the Mexican driver had to be the 2023 Qatar Grand Prix weekend. The 33-year-old collected only one point throughout the two races on the weekend, significantly lacking behind his teammate
Max Verstappen.
Sergio Perez remembered the sprint weekend and said it was probably his worst weekend ever in Formula One. As quoted by motorsport.com, he stated:
"Qatar was really the worst weekend I remember in a while, probably my worst weekend ever in the sport. It was such a bad weekend that I really felt like: 'I cannot be this bad, there's something that's going on.'"
While Perez finished in P10 with multiple track limit penalties, Verstappen went on to win the Grand Prix and also seal he Championship during that weekend.
Red Bull snatched the Constructor's Championship a week before in
Suzuka, where Perez had to retire after his own mistake. In Qatar, the whole team celebrated yet again because
Verstappen won the Drivers' Championship, and that had to be difficult for the Mexican driver.
"When you have these back-to-back races, I feel like sometimes there is not enough time to really go through it all, so I felt like we really had to take a bit of time to make sure that we understood which way we were going."
Looking back, the 33-year-old concluded he became stronger as a result. Perez managed to improve towards the end of the season, showing Red Bull he is worthy of his seat as he sealed second place in the Drivers' Championship during the
Las Vegas Grand Prix.
"It was bad that it happened but in a way, it was really good because it really strengthened our team quite a lot."
