Helmut Marko revealed what he thinks is the real cause for Adrian Newey's decision to switch F1 teams and leave
Red Bull Racing.
At the beginning of the 2024 season, one of Red Bull's most essential employees, the legendary (and most successful) car designer, decided to leave the team.
The 65-year-old later announced he would
join Aston Martin as a Managing Technical Partner. But
why did he decide to leave the team from Milton Keynes, to begin with?
In December 2023, Newey explicitly said he
had "no reason" to leave Red Bull, but his position obviously
changed later. Helmut Marko feels like he
knows part of the reason why.
The 81-year-old Red Bull's motorsport advisor suggested in a recent interview that Adrian Newey's exit is probably tied to the death of Dietrich Mateschitz (co-founder and 49% owner of Red Bull). According to GrandPrix.com, Marko told ORF Tirol:
"There was a certain change with the death of Dietrich Mateschitz. He was in fact the only leader. He made quick decisions. He was a charismatic entrepreneur who had a vision and was prepared to take risks."
"After his death, everything in the company had to be reorganised, because you cannot just replace a single figure with such a personality with just one person."
"I think that the changes in the team were also due to this, and especially in the case of Newey, I think that is why Adrian decided to look for a new challenge."
Following Mateschitz's death, the Austrian team went through a rough internal period marked by power struggles at the top. Marko acknowledged that this didn't help either, as he added:
"And let's put it this way - the situation with Horner certainly didn't help, said Marko. But internally we sat down together and said that we have to join forces, work together in all areas to win this world championship and also have a winning car for the future."
