Mercedes wasn't where they hoped to be after the 2023 season. This prompted the team to go back to the drawing board and change their concept completely. Here are new details about their 2024 car.
On the one hand, Toto Wolff admitted winning second place in the Championship over Ferrari has been a morale boost for his team. On the other hand, Mercedes lost to Red Bull in 2023 by 451 points.
One of the things that gave confidence to Mercedes's F1 team principal after the "unsuccessful" 2023 season was watching Mercedes's customer teams.
While Mercedes struggled on multiple occasions, teams that purchase power units and other parts of Mercedes's car (McLaren and Aston Martin) have been able to make their concepts work better than Mercedes themselves on multiple circuits.
This means that the German team has no problem with the power unit or other components. The only problem for the team is they tried to pursue the wrong concept, and now they have to change the direction.
It.motorsport.com shared new details in relation to Mercedes's W15 (2024 car), one of which is that the seat will be moved back to suit Hamilton's preferences.
Hamilton has been very open about not feeling comfortable in W14 due to the seating position. Well, this year, the seven-time World Champion should be more satisfied.
It.motorsport.com also suggested there will be no extremes on the W15, and the team will keep sides and bottom the same length to limit porpoising.
Toto Wolff promised his team would be changing every single part of their car if possible. While Russell suggested nobody expects to compete with Red Bull at the beginning, at least four teams hope to challenge the team from Milton Keynes late in the season.
At the end of the season, it was four teams behind Red Bull that seemed quite equal - Mercedes, Ferrari, McLaren, and Aston Martin. Will any of them be able to challenge Red Bull in 2024? We will find out on the 2nd March.
