Alpine F1 driver Pierre Gasly talked about the problem with trying to use the platform as a Formula One driver to share positive messages in his most recent interview.
Pierre Gasly was one of the most recent guests on F1's "Beyond the Grid Podcast." Besides other interesting topics that were discussed, the Frenchman also talked about how he tries to push different positive messages into the world as an F1 driver.
While multiple drivers do this with positive intentions only, there is always the risk of misinterpretation. The 27-year-old explained:
"We’re all trying to push and share positive messages which is not easy because when you’re exposed the way we are, sometimes you had or have the right intention and you’re trying to do something right, but it might be perceived the other way."
F1 drivers have to be really careful in what they say and how they say it, as they represent not only themselves but also bigger brands. In Gasly's example, it is Alpine, Renault, and all its sponsors.
"Everyone’s quite careful in that sense that you want to do something great but how is it going to be received in the public?"
Lewis Hamilton is an example of a driver who is unafraid to express his feelings. For instance, the seven-time World Champion wore a helmet with an LGBTQ+ rainbow design during the race in Qatar.
"So, I think the will is there. Lewis [Hamilton] is very inspiring in that sense because he’s involved in bringing the spotlight on many different topics."
F1 drivers are becoming more and more influential due to Netflix's "Drive to Survive" series, which is growing in popularity all over the world.
"I think it’s quite good for our young generation that we understand the power, obviously he’s got the biggest community, the biggest exposure, but we get a glimpse of what’s possible."
