Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton explained why his last few years in Formula 1 remind him of playing golf.
The most recent Grand Prix weekend in Singapore did not turn out well for Lewis Hamilton. Although he qualified in P3, his race strategy wasn't optimal, and he also didn't have a performance in the car to match rivals like Red Bull, Ferrari, or McLaren.
It was clear that the seven-time World Champion wasn't happy with how the race went and he expressed his frustration when speaking to the media afterward.
The 39-year-old stated that his team didn't listen to his suggestions before the race and that he wanted to go for a different strategy. A week later, however, Hamilton apologized through social media for his frustrated comments after the race on Sunday.
When asked by the media in Singapore whether his car was making his life difficult this season, Lewis Hamilton replied:
"No, this one's definitely been better. The last two years, it made all of us in the team's lives tough. I would say these rules have made life tough for everyone."
"Some weekends we arrive and we think we’re going to be better than we are and we’re not great, and then some weekends all of a sudden we’re there and win the race and it lifts us up."
This season has indeed been a rollercoaster for Mercedes. After a tough start, it looked like Silver Arrows recovered a few races before the summer break, where they scored six podiums and three race victories.
However, the German team fell back down the order again right after the summer break. Hamilton compared this up-and-down rollercoaster to playing golf.
"It's a bit like playing golf. You get one good hit and it makes you continue, but all the rest of the shots are really bad! It's that kind of experience."
"It can be so frustrating, but you still love it and you still continue to go. You've got to keep pushing because you're searching for that feeling again like we've had at Silverstone or Spa."
