Aston Martin Formula One driver
Fernando Alonso won the "Action of the Year" award for his battle with
Sergio Perez during the 2023
Sao Paulo Grand Prix.
The FIA Gala award-giving ceremony took place yesterday in Baku, Azerbaijan, and Fernando Alonso won the prize for the "action of the year" for his battle with Sergio Perez.
While the Spanish matador could not attend the FIA Gala directly, she recorded a video message that was played at the live event.
The double World Champion thanked the fans but also made a warm gesture when he said he would like to share the award with Sergio Perez.
"Hello to all the fans, and big thanks for voting me the action of the year for my battle with Sergio in Brazil. I also want to thank and share this award with Sergio."
The race in Sao Paulo was not exactly as packed with action as some of the other races, but Perez and Alonso made up for everything during the final laps of the race with their amazing battle.
Perez, on a faster
Red Bull, caught up to Alonso, who was in third place. The two battled on the track for a solid few laps until Perez finally overtook the 42-year-old during the race's penultimate lap.
While everybody thought that was the end of action, the Aston Martin F1 driver managed to hold on to the Mexican going into the race's final lap and overtook him to retake third place on the final lap of the race.
The battle between Alonso and Perez ended in one of the closest finishes we saw this season, with
only 0.053 seconds separating the two drivers at the finish line.
The Spanish Matador said in the video it takes the collaboration of two drivers for such amazing action. He added the action should be an example for the present and the future drivers.
"Any battle on track needs a collaboration of two, and I think this should be an example not only for the present but also for future generations that we must promote clean driving without any contact between cars."
