Australian former F1 racing driver shared his opinion of the fight between
Sergio Perez and
Lewis Hamilton for the second place in the Drivers' Championship.
After a tough couple of recent races for Sergio Perez, the gap between him and
Mercedes driver
Lewis Hamilton has decreased slowly (even after Hamilton DNFed in the 2023
Qatar Grand Prix).
The Mexican driver has lately been attacked from all sides for his underwhelming performances in comparison to his dominant teammate,
Max Verstappen.
According to eight-time Grand Prix winner Mark Webber, Perez seems to be struggling in the mixed weather conditions. The Australian told Channel 4:
"Well, when we talk about whether that’s gonna be an interesting one with Brazil and Mexico, and once we get out of these UAE countries, as that’s where Sergio is still struggling, these mixed weather conditions."
If Perez continues losing points, Hamilton might be able to catch up quicker than anticipated. While it is possible, Webber thinks that the Mexican will find his form and secure second place.
"He’s lost a lot of points throughout the year, of course. That’s where Lewis is just going to be relentless. That’ll be pretty brutal if he tracks him down. But, I think Sergio will still nip it."
What is fascinating about this fight is that the seven-time world champion does not seem to care too much about finishing second in the Championship, while Perez's future in
Red Bull might depend on it.
The battle will continue in the form of Sprint weekend during the
United States Grand Prix at
Circuit of the Americas.
