The team principal of the British F1 team Aston Martin, Mike Krack, discussed the uncertainty his team faced before the beginning of the 2024 season.
Aston Martin's 2023 season could be defined by oscillating performances. The team started very strong, then slowly fell behind Mercedes, Ferrari, and McLaren, and then recovered a bit towards the end of the season.
Even though they finished in fifth place, last year has been a great success for the British team in comparison to 2022 when they finished seventh in the Championship.
Aston with Fernando Alonso has been named the surprise of the season, thanks to their amazing start. But then, as Mike Krack described, his team found out the development race in front of the pack was much harsher.
Going into the winter break in December, the team's goal was to ideally repeat the significant step forward they had been able to do ahead of 2023. On the other hand, everything will depend on comparison to other teams. As quoted by Formula 1, he explained:
"We’re up against formidable competitors, and the big question mark over the winter is always what kind of job other teams have done. There’s a lot of nail-biting. You’re always asking yourself: 'Have we done enough?'"
Even Max Verstappen recently said he cannot be sure if his team will be in the dominant position again next season as it is "always unknown" how big of progress other teams can achieve.
However, regardless of their position at the start of the season, Aston Martin will have to work hard to either maintain their advantage or to close the gap, as Krack said:
"Whatever happens, it always results in the same loop: if the cars roll out and we haven’t done enough, then we have to work hard to improve. If we have done enough, then we have to work hard to improve further. That’s the only recipe that works in Formula 1."
