In the official press release shared by Aston Martin, Fernando Alonso responded to his contract extension with Aston Martin until at least 2026.
On Thursday, April 11th, the words of Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff became true. During the 2024 Japanese Grand Prix weekend, he said he expected a "big-name" driver to sign a contract with one of the F1 teams in the upcoming weeks.
Not even a whole week later, it was announced that the most experienced driver in F1- Fernando Alonso, extended his deal with Aston Martin until at least 2026. In the official press release, the Spanish matador was quoted as saying:

"There has been much said and written about my future in Formula One in the past few months, but today I'm delighted to announce that I'm here to stay with Aston Martin Aramco in a multi-year agreement."

The double world champion initially said he wanted to see if he wanted to continue racing, but he added that if he decided to keep on, he would talk to his current team first.
The team principal of Aston Martin, Mike Krack, confirmed that the 42-year-old stayed true to his words. Alonso continued:

"I said at the start of the year that I would decide if I wanted to continue racing first and then sit down with the team."

"From the moment I joined the team in 2023 I felt extremely at home. In just over 15 months we have already achieved so much together, with some memorable podiums and battles."

Alonso thanked everyone involved in the process and hinted that Lance Stroll (whose contract also expires at the end of 2024) will continue with the team.

"I am very grateful for the trust Lawrence, Martin and Mike have put in me and with Lance I am excited to see what else we can achieve together."

"This is only the beginning for this project and I am proud to be part of it. I am at my physical best and still hungry. I will give my all as we continue our journey to becoming a world championship winning team."
