Fernando Alonso is currently the oldest drive in Formula One, and he has hinted that it may soon change.
As a 42-year-old, many expected that the Spanish driver wouldn't be in the sport by now, but his incredibly resilience shows just how sensational driver the two-time World Champion is.
In 2024, he will be driving for Aston Martin, but a lot has changed in the F1 market since Lewis Hamilton announced that he would be leaving to Ferrari.
Suddenly, there's a free seat in one of the top three teams - Mercedes, and it wouldn't be a surprise if Alonso was one of the drivers who would be offered to drive alongside George Russell.
The British driver is not concerned by who is going to be his next teammate, especially after having an experience of driving alongside the seven-time World Champion.
Ahead of the 2024 Bahrain Grand Prix, Alonso was asked about his potential move to Mercedes, but he shocked by saying that he first needs to decide whether he still wants to continue.
"First of all, I need to decide if I want to keep racing. I will need to decide that in a few races. I feel great now but it's a demanding calendar."
Considering his age, it wouldn't be a surprise if Alonso made a decision to retire, nonetheless, it would be a sad day for Formula One, as he's one of the most accomplished and respected drivers.
On top of that, the F1 regulations will change in 2026, and that's also something that may contribute to the decision whether Alonso will stay in the sport, or announce his retirement. Speaking at the Bahrain International Circuit, the Spaniard admitted he'll take some time before deciding.
"In 2026, there are different regulations that are maybe tempting or not. I will wait a few races to decide."
