The Spanish Matador started the Saturday grand prix from ninth place on the grid and had a great start as he overtook
Kevin Magnussen right away.
The Aston Martin had a good run and switched to the inside line into turn one as he wanted to dive down the inside on two cars on his right hand, but lost control of his car suddenly and spun out.
His incident was one of the prime causes of the carnage that followed, but fortunately for Alonso, he was able to continue in the race.
The incident set the 42-year-old a long way back, but he got lucky when a safety car was deployed two laps later, which allowed him to catch up with the rest of the pack.
Alonso then had a long recovery race and in the end, he managed to finish in P9, a very good result in the end considering the terrible start. However, the Spaniard shared it was "not much fun" for him.
"There is not much fun to drive at this kind of circuits, at 360kph, with no grip, no visibility and bouncing like hell."
Concerning his first lap incident, Alonso did not seem to fully understand what happened. As he mentioned, he still needs to look at the replays.
"I haven't seen the TV yet, and I still need to watch what happened. I lost the car and I don't know if I was in a sandwich between two cars or if I was alone, but I thought it was all over when I saw the Alfa Romeo [of Bottas]."
As Alonso spun around, he faced the wrong track direction and saw
Valtteri Bottas coming right at him, which is what he described when he said he thought it was all over.
Fortunately, the Alfa Romeo driver almost stopped before hitting Alonso and ended up only gently pushing him. The double World Champion added:
"I was facing the wrong the way, so I am happy with the final result and scoring some points."
