Williams F1 driver Alex Albon recently compared himself to McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Pastri, saying the car plays a huge role.
Williams team currently stands seventh in the Constructors' Championship with 28 points, 27 of which were collected by Alex Albon with his amazing performances.
The 27-year-old outperformed his teammate Logan Sargeant during every single race this season that he has not retired from.
Even though he drives at the back of the field usually, Albon's performances started gaining attraction across the whole Formula One paddock.
His former F1 team principal, Christian Horner, recently called him "hot property." Albon recently reflected on his results as he told Auto Hebdo:
"I’m definitely driving better than last year, simply because I have more experience and I’m more settled into the team."
The 27-year-old compared himself with McLern drivers. McLaren made a huge comeback in the middle of the season from the back of the grid, and the team's drivers started being regular part of podium celebrations.
"But obviously, in our sport, the team is the most important part of the equation. Look at McLaren. Lando and Oscar are having a wonderful season; they’re driving so well, and yet they had almost no points at the start of the year."
Williams made a great step forward this season compared to the previous one, during which the team ended last in the Championship.
However, the team has not been able to give Albon a car that would allow him to compete for the podium with the best teams on the grid, like Mercedes, Red Bull, Ferrari, Aston Martin, or McLaren. The 27-year-old driver elaborated on the point with McLaren drivers:
"They both found themselves in the top three overnight without having changed drastically in themselves. The car still has a huge influence on a driver’s perception in F1, and this is also the case for me."
Alex Albon had a chance to be compared to one of the best - Max Verstappen during seasons 2019 and 2020, but he could not perform at the very high standard set by the Dutchman at the time.
However, the Williams driver seems to have evolved and gained much experience since then. Would you like to see Albon in one of the top teams?
