The second Free Practice at the 2023
Abu Dhabi Grand Prix hinted at what the real pace of teams may be, and the results suggest that the final race of the season will be action-packed.
After ten rookies got a chance to join the action during
the first Free Practice session at the
Yas Marina Circuit, the FP2 had already seen all 20 drivers from the 2023 F1 grid race around the circuit in Abu Dhabi.
With one less practice session available, it seemed that
Ferrari's
Charles Leclerc,
Lando Norris in
McLaren, and
Max Verstappen in
Red Bull were the most eager drivers to get out on the track as they were the fastest in the second Free Practice session.
Moreover, the Monegasque driver improved the lap time set by
George Russell in
Mercedes by over a second, completing the lap in 1:24.809, which was the fastest lap time on Friday.
Valtteri Bottas, who placed fourth in FP1, occupied the same position also after FP2, showing that
Alfa Romeo has some serious pace in Abu Dhabi, as his teammate,
Zhou Guanyu, placed seventh.
Sergio Perez also wanted to make up for the lost time, finishing only two spots behind his teammate, who
the Mexican recently said motivates him to improve.
The winner of the first Free Practice, George Russell, finished sixth, with his teammate in Silver Arrows,
Lewis Hamilton, placing eighth in FP2.
The Top 10 in the standings was completed by
Alpine's
Pierre Gasly and
Oscar Piastri in McLaren, who both put together very solid lap times.
Aston Martin seemed to be showing a lot of promise in FP1, but in FP2,
Fernando Alonso and
Lance Stroll managed to put the car only in 11th and 13th positions, respectively.
Daniel Ricciardo, who finished third in FP1, improved his lap time only a little bit, putting his
AlphaTauri on the 12th spot, three positions ahead of his teammate
Yuki Tsunoda.
It wasn't a good practice session for
Esteban Ocon and
Carlos Sainz, who found themselves in 14th and 19th place, respectively, and two teams,
Williams and
Haas, once again showed their vulnerabilities.
Already during FP1, it was palpable that they may be the slowest two teams in Abu Dhabi, and it only confirmed in FP2 with Alexander Albon and
Logan Sargeant 16th and 18th, and
Kevin Magnussen and
Nico Hulkenberg 17th and 20th.
