Mattia Binotto

Mattia Binotto is a Swiss-born Italian engineer and a former team principal of the Scuderia Ferrari team competing in the 2022 Formula One World Championship.

Date of Birth:3 November 1969
Birthplace:Lausanne, Switzerland

Mattia Binotto was born on November 3, 1969, in Lausanne, Switzerland, to Italian parents. Binotto studied at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering in 1994.

Binotto also obtained a master's in motor vehicle engineering at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia in Italy. His studies prepared Binotto and made him a perfect candidate for the Scuderia Ferrari team, which he joined in 1995 to work in the engine department.

The Italian worked alongside masterminds like Ross Brawn (technical director at Ferrari) and Jean Todt (Ferrari's team principal at the time), who played a pivotal role in steering the team toward one of the most successful periods in its history.

Binotto was part of the Scuderia Ferrari during its five consecutive years of winning the Formula One Constructors' and Drivers' Championships with their elite drivers Rubens Barrichello and seven-time world champion Michael Schumacher during the years 2000 - 2004.

In 2013, Binotto became the head of the engine department, and later, in 2016, he was promoted to chief technical officer (CTO) of Scuderia Ferrari to replace James Allison. Since Binotto stepped into his role, Ferrari got its second breath after multiple years of not competing for the title.

In 2019, Binotto was promoted to the position of team principal. In 2022, the team was able to build yet another title-contending car, and it seemed like Ferrari had a shot at becoming world champions after 13 years since their previous Constructors' Championship win in 2008.

After the season's first three races, Ferrari stood in first place with a comfortable margin. However, the tables turned after that, and the Red Bull Racing team with Max Verstappen won almost all of the remaining races, securing a 205-point lead in the Constructors' Championship ahead of Ferrari.

After spending all 27 years of his career in Scuderia Ferrari, Mattia Binotto announced his resignation after the 2022 season.
