Sky F1 commentator David Croft recently named
James Vowles as the "team boss of the year" after lifting
Williams from the bottom of the Championship standings.
Williams's success can be significantly attributed to
Alex Albon and his impressive performances that have
recently been recognized by both drivers and
team principals.
However, Williams's new team principal, James Vowles, also played a key role in the team's success in 2023. David Croft suggested on a recent episode of
Sky Sports F1 podcast he is the team boss of the year:
"He is my team boss of the year, without a doubt. If you look at the lead time that he had before he took up the role, you're talking a matter of three months maximum.
Vowles joined Williams just a few months ahead of the 2023 season, and the development direction for the car had already been set at that point, so there wasn't much he could change about the year 2023.
"That is not a lot of time to put into operation any sort of plan where you hit the ground running and you get instant results."
According to Albon, a decision has been made to write off the 2023 season as soon as it began and focus on 2024. Nevertheless, the team still achieved its best result in the last six years. Crofty continued:
"He works brilliantly with the sponsors. He engages with the media, explains things not just about Williams, but about know what's going on on track."
2023 was the first season for the 44-year-old in the position of the team principal, but he handled it more than well and Croft predicts him to be at the top in a few years. He added:
"He engages with fans a lot. I love him on social media because he actually engages directly with the fans. People are inspired by him. I think he will go on to be one of the top team principals at a top team in three or four years' time."
