Williams's team principal explained his team's aspirations going into the new season after exceeding expectations in 2023.
James Vowles became the new team principal of the Williams F1 team only a few months ahead of the start of the 2023 season. He found the organization at a worse level than he expected.
However, the team principal identified key issues and started turning things around. Lately, he stated he was encouraged by the team's shortcomings.
The 44-year-old explained the team managed to finish seventh in the Championship despite being 15-20 years out of date in certain aspects. That suggests there lies great potential within the team. According to F1, the team principal also said:
"What I like about the season is McLaren have shown you how they can go from the back to the front, AlphaTauri have shown you how you can develop the car and move forward."
Williams has not focused on the development of the 2023 car, as they wrote it off as soon as the season began. Now, looking at other teams who introduced successful upgrades, Williams has a hope of moving up the field as well.
"We have to a certain extent as well; we were a team that wasn’t really scoring points to a team that from the August break onwards has been in and around the points the whole time, so I quite like that about this regulation set that you’re getting teams moving up and down."
McLaren has started 2022 even worse than Williams, and AlphaTauri has improved only a few races before the end of the season.
Nevertheless, they showed it is possible. McLaren is now aiming to start the season in second place, while AlphaTauri might be knocking on the door of the top five. That is the kind of progress Vowles would like to see from his team in 2024.
"The reality behind it is that there are teams this year, McLaren’s one of them, AlphaTauri is another one of them, that are putting huge performance on the car and starting to fight with the giants. Our aspirations are very clearly to keep moving forward in the way that we have."
