Max Verstappen commented on
Fernando Alonso's potential move to
Red Bull, saying he couldn't see it making sense for his team.
There has been a lot of talk about Alonso's potential move to Red Bull over the course of the recent few weeks. According to The Race, the Spanish Matador
was "pushing hard" to see if there could be any opportunity in the Austrian team.
The 42-year-old continues proving his qualities, and if Red Bull were in search of an experienced driver for a relatively short period of time, he might be the ideal choice.
On the other hand, the triple World Champion Max Verstappen, who is clearly number one on the team from Milton Keynes, thinks it would be weird. He told the Dutch newspaper De Limburger:
"I don't care who sits next to me. I also said that to the team. I always believe in myself, and in my opinion, I can beat everyone. But if you ask me, I would find it weird to sign a 42-year-old driver."
Red Bull did work with some experienced drivers in the past, but the Austrian team has never signed someone as old as the Spaniard.
Quite the opposite, Red Bull is known for giving chances to young, promising talents. Consequently, Verstappen doesn't see signing Alonso as in line with the team's overall ethos.
"Red Bull has always had the tradition of training young drivers itself. The signing of Sergio didn't match that trend, and with a 42-year-old driver that's especially the case."
On the other hand, Verstappen gets along very well with the double World Champion and might form together one of the strongest driver pairings ever. He added:
"I can get along with Fernando, that's not my point. But I also look at the future of the team. Ultimately it is up to them to determine who drives where."
