Max Verstappen made life a lot easier for himself with a great start off the line. Starting from second place, he had inside for the first corner, and as he was already level with Norris going into the corner, it was an easy overtake for the Dutchman.
One thing that helped the Flying Dutchman was a little scrap between
Lando Norris and
George Russell, who overtook the
McLaren driver and then slowed him down.
The battle between drivers behind Verstappen helped the three-time World Champion escape to a distance greater than one second. Consequently, Norris could not get DRS on the straight.
From that point on, it looked like an easy, well-managed race for the 26-year-old. Norris was able to close the gap to him to about 1.2 seconds at one point, but that was about it.
In the end, Verstappen
crossed the line in first place 4.2 seconds ahead of the McLaren driver in second place and 13.6 seconds ahead of Russell in third place.
Verstappen compared his Sprint race experience to the last year when he started from the P2 and finished in P4. As reported by
formula1.com, the Dutchman said:
"Last year was very difficult for us around here, but today was much better. I think for everyone out there, you can't push flat-out; it's just about keeping the tires under control, and we did that well today."
Verstappen will start from pole position on Sunday. He will have
Charles Leclerc on
Ferrari on his left-hand side. The Monegasque driver will start from the same place that Verstappen did during the sprint race. The Dutchman concluded:
"It's a great start. I think we learned a lot during that race, and hopefully, we can do something similar tomorrow."
