Aston Martin driver Fernando Alonso collided with Alpine driver Esteban Ocon during the 2023 Sao Paulo Grand Prix Sprint Shooutout at Interlagos Circuit.
The Sprint Shootout session had to be paused at the end of SQ1 following the crash between Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso in the tuner number 3.
The Alpine driver, who was on a fast lap, lost his rear going out of turn two into turn three. He had to countersteer to avoid spinning out, and unfortunately, he went straight into Alonso on the outside of the corner.
Ocon maybe thought that Alonso could have left him more space as he labeled the Spanish matador "f**king idiot" on team radio right after the crash.
While the onboard camera from Alonso's Aston Martin suggested he turned into Ocon, the onboard camera on the Frenchman's car revealed he lost his rear and had to correct his car, which resulted in the collision.
The incident looked nasty for Ocon as he was sent spinning into the barrier close to the track, completely damaging the rear end of his car.
The immediate reaction of the Aston Martin driver right after the incident was to defend himself as he suggested Ocon crashed into him, saying: "He went into me, I think."
Fortunately, both drivers seemed completely fine after the crash. On the other hand, Ocon placed P16 and obviously could not improve on his time, and it is also not clear whether he will take part in the Sprint race.
Moreover, the Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso also suffered damage, which made him unable to continue in the session, and he placed P15 as a result.
Both drivers left their mechanics with a lot of work as the mechanics have only 3,5 hours between the Sprint Shootout and Sprint Race, which is scheduled to begin at 15:30 local time.
