Max Verstappen made sure that no other man would start from the pole position in 2024, yet, as he won the qualifying for the 2024
Japanese Grand Prix.
The Dutch driver has won every race that he finished in the 2024 season, and he wants to keep that run going also at the
Suzuka Circuit. After
not finishing the Australian Grand Prix, Verstappen came even more motivated to Japan, and it showed in the qualifying.
The Dutchman was the fastest in Q1 and also Q2, and that didn't change in Q3, with no one seemingly being able to challenge the three-time World Champion.
On his last run,
Sergio Perez had a strong run, and at one point, he was even ahead of his
Red Bull teammate, but the last corner decided, and Verstappen was faster, completing a lap in
1:28.197.
That meant the Mexican finished 0.066 seconds behind his teammate, who was aware that his lap had some minor flaws, but still believed to be in a "good position for tomorrow."
With Red Bull finishing one-two, it was the 27th front-row lockout for the team, and also the fourth time that Verstappen will start from the pole position this season.
"It was quite close at the end. When you really want to go to the limit, it doesn't always work out. Of course, you want every lap to be perfect, but around the track like this, it's not always the case."
Behind Red Bulls,
Lando Norris in
McLaren was the third-fastest in the qualifying, with the most recent Grand Prix winner,
Carlos Sainz, coming only in fourth, as
Ferrari and
Mercedes seemingly struggled during the qualifying session.
While those will focus on improving their position in Sunday's race, Verstappen's focus will be on winning his third race of the season and keeping his leading position in the World Drivers' Championship.
