Max Verstappen had a clash with his race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, at the 2024 Hungarian Grand Prix, and he recently revealed how they resolved it.
There probably isn't any other sport where athletes would be going around tracks at hundreds of miles per hour, while having a microphone mounted in their balaclavas, with every word broadcasted to the audience.
As such, it's not a surprise that every now and then, F1 fans get to hear an interesting conversation between a driver and their race engineer during tense moments of a Grand Prix.
Such moment happened at the Hungaroring, when Verstappen and his race engineer, often called 'GP' seemingly clashed via radio, as the World Drivers' Championship leader wasn't happy about his team's tactical choices.
Since then, the question was whether their relationship has been impacted, but as Verstappen told Viaplay, it wasn't even close to happening, as both are professionals, and they were able to solve the situation.
"Everything has been resolved. I’m not going to talk about that. It’s very simple, you don’t have to talk about it for a long time, and we’re just going for it again. That’s how it should be, and that’s how it has always been, to be honest. A lot of things are also taken out of context."
At the end of the day, it wasn't about who was right and who was wrong for Verstappen. Instead, the 26-year-old wanted to foucs on the team's effort, which could always be better.
"We have to get better, because otherwise it will be a long season, that is my conclusion. That was very clear. Everyone is going for it full throttle and we are going to make the best of it until the end of the season. Hopefully, it will still offer enough opportunities to win a race here and there."
The three-time World Champion also spoke about the sudden improvement of the rest of the field. While Red Bull seemingly took a step back, everyone else improved, and Verstappen sees it.
"That is very clear. Now it is up to us to try to put it right again, but that is not easy. Other teams around us are performing very consistently and are simply doing well. So yes, hopefully there will be more chances for us to win."
Like a true champion, the Dutch driver saw the team's recent setbacks as a lesson rather than a shortcoming. He's aware that not only he as a driver, but also Red Bull as a team, learn with every race, and the past few races have taught them really important lessons.
"All races were educational, some things you could have done better in hindsight, but hindsight is always easy. Every weekend is always a learning experience, but that is also typical of Formula 1."
"You have to be realistic. I have always said: there will come a time when the weather changes, and that has been going on for a few races now."
