Lance Stroll's 2024 Saudi Arabian Grand Prix was far from successful, as he crashed early in the race due to his own mistake.
In the first race of the 2024 F1 season, all cars crossed the finish line, completing the race without having a safety car come on the track. That was different at the Jeddah Corniche Circuit, as Pierre Gasly was forced to retire the car already after the first lap because of the gearbox issue, and then Stroll crashed on Lap 6.
The Canadian found his car in the barriers at Turn 23, which was the result of his contact with the wall at Turn 22, something that happened also to his teammate, Fernando Alonso, during the race, but didn't result in a crash.
His team was aware of the fact that the crash was the driver's mistake, and so was Stroll, who wasn't afraid to be self-critical after the second race of the season, admitting his own mistake.
"I just touched the inside left at Turn 22, so just a mistake. A disappointing way to conclude a good weekend. I’d been pushing really hard in those opening laps – the cars around us were definitely faster and the tyres were already struggling. I was trying to build a gap and just clipped the wall."
According to the 25-year-old, the mistake was also the result of trying to create a gap to the cars behind him, as he felt that the cars around him were faster at the time.
Still, despite making a mistake, there are positives that the Aston Martin driver can take from the second Grand Prix weekend of the 2024 F1 season, as his teammate managed to be quite successful.
"There are positives to take away, the team has scored points in both races and we feel there’s more pace to unlock in the car. I’m already looking ahead to Australia – it’s a race and a country that I really enjoy and I’m sure we can pick up the momentum again."
