Haas F1 team principal
Guenther Steiner stated to have clear evidence concerning a review of the 2023
United States Grand Prix results.
A small controversy sparked right after the 2023 United States Grand at
Circuit of the Americas. Onboard footage of
Sergio Perez's
Red Bull showed he was outside of track limits in the same turn multiple times.
Even though the Mexican driver apparently seemed to have ignored the track limits in turn six on numerous occasions, he has not been awarded a single penalty.
The Haas F1 team is seeking a review of the results. The team seems to have proof of multiple drivers ignoring the track limits in the same turn on the track (turn number 6).
Evidently, no camera was situated in turn 6 to observe whether drivers adhered to the track limits. It seems that
Alex Albon and Sergio Perez might be in trouble as a consequence.
Haas submitted a review appeal and teams, including
Red Bull,
Aston Martin, and
Williams, were all summoned to the virtual hearing. Steiner told Motorsport Total:
"There are rules. If the stewards do not have the correct information, then of course they cannot intervene."
You might ask what is there to gain for Haas from this situation.
Nico Hulkenberg finished in P11, just one position outside of points. If Alex Albon was penalized, Hulkenberg could potentially be moved into tenth place, collecting one valuable point for Haas.
"We completely understand that. However, now we have the information and we will see what the FIA does once they have that information at their disposal."
It is suggested that the "clear evidence" is an onboard footage from the cars during the race, which shows drivers putting their cars outside the track limits. Haas team principal added:
"I completely understand that [the stewards] have not seen the images yet, but if that is the case, how can they make a decision with certainty? However, now we have clear evidence."
It is interesting to watch how stewards will decide if there is "clear evidence," as Steiner states. Could Perez and Albon join
disqualified drivers from the United States Grand Prix? Could they receive a grid position penalty?
