Ferrari Formula One driver
Carlos Sainz Jr. came to surprise his dad, Carlos Sainz Sr., after the last stage of the 2024 Dakar Rally as the 61-year-old clinched the historical win for Audi.
The 61-year-old Spanish rally driver Carlos Sainz won the prestigious Dakar Rally yesterday. This win was the fourth in Sainz's collection and was quite remarkable as he made history with Audi.
Sainz's biggest rival throughout the event has been the WRC legend Sebastian Loeb, but due to bad luck on Thursday, the French nine-time WRC Champion's chances for the win disappeared.
All the Spanish Matador had to do on Friday was to bring the win home, which he did as he crossed the finish line 1 hour and 20 minutes ahead of Guillaume de Mevius on Totyota in the second place.
Carlos Sainz Sr. did not win a single stage, but he was the most consistent of all the drivers. His Dakar Rally 2024 win marked Audi's first-ever win in the car category.
The German manufacturer is stepping down after this year. Audi entered the prestigious competition in an attempt to win the World's toughest rally with an electric car, and they succeeded in their third and final year.
This is also the first time an electric-powered car won the Dakar Rally in the history of the series. The Spanish driver told the media: "I am very happy for Audi, the many fans of the brand, and my fellow countrymen."
"This victory means a lot to me. It’s my fourth victory with the fourth different brand. The team has developed a very special concept with which we are the first in the Dakar Rally. Only Audi was brave enough to take this risk."
"I’m happy that we’ve made history with it. And in one of the toughest editions of this rally that I have experienced."
Carlos Sainz Jr. added a post on his X (formerly Twitter). The
29-year-old driver made a quick trip from Maranello to surprise his dad at the finish of the Dakar Rally, and the two had a lovely moment together celebrating the fourth win. See the video below.
