Scuderia Ferrari F1 driver Carlos Sainz Jr. explained his priorities in relation to questions about the contract for the 2025 season.
Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc have their driver contracts with Scuderia Ferrari valid until the end of the next season - 2024. While many Formula One fans and experts already speculate over who should and who will get the seat for 2025, Sainz responds the priorities are elsewhere at this moment.
"It’s not a question of not wanting to renew, it’s just that we haven’t sat down, we’ve been traveling all day, and the priority is to finish the season in the best possible way. Why are you going to start negotiating with four months left in the winter, when you can have time and calm?"
Sainz, who according to former F1 driver Ralf Schumacher isn't as talented as his teammate, refers to "winter" as he aims to come to a conclusion during a winter break post-2023 season when all races are done and drivers have a short period of time to rest, or in his case, focus on future contract negotiations.
My future, I think I have said it several times, will be decided, or I will try to decide it, in winter. You know what my priority or intention is in the medium to long term, or in the short, medium, and long term, and I hope we can find out in the winter.
Sainz has performed better than his teammate over the last couple of races, scoring a podium at Monza Circuit and an incredible victory during the Singapore Grand Prix. He has also scored the only non-Red Bull win of the season. The Spaniard commented:
"If you’re in a good moment in your racing career, it’s always easier to negotiate than if you’re in a bad one, but I don’t think the last few races have changed Ferrari’s view of me or my view of Ferrari because I think we both knew the ability and potential we have, and my view in winter was going to be the same whether I won in Singapore or not."
