George Russell shared details of the call from Mercedes chief engineer Andrew Shovlin after the 2023 Singapore Grand Prix.
The 2023 Singapore Grand Prix was a race of many stories. One of them was George Russell, driving for Mercedes, who started a race from the second position after tremendous qualifying. Russell's lap time was less than 0.1 seconds away from the pole position lap of Carlos Sainz driving for Scuderia Ferrari.
As the race unfolded, Russell found himself in third position, followed by teammate Lewis Hamilton on much fresher tires than leading Sainz and second place Lando Norris. The two Silver Arrow drivers were caught up with the leading due few laps before the end of the race.
Russell had a great battle with Norris, however, with the help of DRS, Norris was able to just keep Russell at bay for a few laps. The pressure was on during the final lap of the race when, all of a sudden, a small mistake from George Russell sent his car into the wall, resulting in a DNF from what could have been a podium finish.
His teammate Hamilton took third place in the end, however, the Singapore Grand Prix weekend could have been a lot more successful for the Mercedes team. During his recent appearance in Beyond The Grid Podcast, Russell mentioned he received a call from Mercedes chief engineer Andrew Shovlin that night where Shovlin said:
"George the only reason we had a chance of victory this weekend was because of the amazing job you did in qualifying, the amazing pace you showed in the race. You gave us what that feeling was to fight for victory again and you need to take that for what it is. It was a very small mistake, forget about it. Move on."
The words of encouragement were "really refreshing" to hear for the British driver. Russell, who talked about Mercedes' Team Principal Toto Wolff in the same interview, analyzed the incident multiple times after the race and said he won't let it influence his performance in future races.
