Alex Albon was one of the drivers who showed great pace in practice sessions when he achieved second place in two of the practices - something that is extraordinary for a team like Williams.
However, he had to start the race from the 14th place on the grid as his last Q1 lap time in the qualifying session on Friday was deleted due to track limits.
The chances of scoring a point went down before the beginning of the race, but Albon managed to finish the Mexico City Grand Prix in P9, bringing two valuable points home for Williams. He told the media after the race:
"It was a great race, which surprised me, as we didn’t have that much race pace. The track was a little bit too hot for us so required a lot of tire management, which I expected."
Race in Mexico City was the second consecutive point-scoring race for Albon. The Williams driver currently stands 13th in the Drivers' Championship. He added:
"We had very good starts where we gained some good positions and also had a good strategy, but the red flag ruined that a little bit, so we had to reset before the restart."
The 27-year-old driver revealed he didn't think a better position was in the cards for him this weekend even though he finished only five seconds behind
Oscar Piastri on
McLaren.
"We made up the places lost during the Safety Car, and I think regardless of Qualifying yesterday, P9 was the best result we could’ve done today, so I’m happy."
Williams F1 team is currently seventh in the Constructors' Championship, mainly because of Albon's amazing performances. He will have a chance for a third consecutive point finish this week at Sao Paulo.
