McLaren driver Lando Norris pinpointed what activities he did in order to improve as a driver to the point where he scored seven podiums in the 2023 season.
Valtteri Bottas recently stated it is a lot harder to show what you've got as a driver when you can't race with an uncompetitive car.
Lando Norris wasn't exactly in the worst car throughout his career, but in 2023, he got a chance to show his driving skills with a car that could almost match Red Bull on some circuits.
The 24-year-old showed he could play equal game with World Champions like Max Verstappen, Lewis Hamilton, or Fernando Alonso and proved he is currently one of the best F1 drivers on the grid.
It seems the Papaya driver made significant progress as a driver throughout the last couple of seasons, and he revealed what he did to get where he is when he told motorsport.com:
"I’m not going to say the secrets of it or whatever, just a lot of simulator is probably one of the biggest things."
Many drivers have similar ways of improving. Carlos Sainz recently revealed he looks at onboard recordings from a select few drivers to see what they are doing differently.
However, the best and most accurate comparison drivers always get when looking at the driving data of their own teammates, which are available to them. Norris continued:
"But also time on looking into the data against me and Daniel [Ricciardo, 2021-2022], me and Oscar [Piastri, 2023-onwards], even me and Carlos [Sainz, 2019-2020]."
While the 24-year-old driver obviously has a lot of talent, he attributes his current success to a lot of hard work. He added:
"We went back that far to kind of understand what I was doing good and bad then, what he was doing good and bad then, and same for Daniel and same for Oscar now. Just work, basically."
