In one of his most recent interviews, McLaren Formula One driver Lando Norris discussed his self-critical approach.
Lando Norris can often be heard criticizing himself for his own performance or mistakes on the team radio or during press conferences after different sessions.
Nico Rosberg analyzed Norris's behavior during the 2023 season when he said he could spot signs of "mental struggle" in the 24-year-old McLaren F1 driver.
On the one hand, it is refreshing when a driver shows accountability and doesn't blame the car or everyone around him.
On the other hand, the Formula 1 World Champion suggested that it isn't doing any good to the Briton when he criticizes and faults himself for everything.
Norris already addressed this issue, saying he is aware of his behavior and that he has been the same ever since he raced in go-karts. In one of his latest interviews, he told the Guardian:
"I am self-critical and I know it can look bad from the outside, absolutely. I watch my own interviews and I look so annoyed and unhappy."
Even though he showed multiple incredible race performances in 2023, the Papaya F1 driver also had a bad streak of qualifying sessions towards the end of the season, where he made mistakes too often.
Back then, the 24-year-old driver just wouldn't stop criticizing himself. Norris explained it's because in his mind, he's always thinking about what he could have done differently. He added:
"It's because my mind is whirling, I'm thinking: 'Why did I make a mistake? What happened if I did this or that? What if I had tried something else?"
"But I set high goals for myself, I know what I am capable of, I want to try to achieve great things and I am not going to do that by being complacent."
