Former F1 driver Timo Glock talked about the main problem for the
Red Bull driver
Sergio Perez going forward.
After
DNF in Mexico City, Perez came to
Sao Paulo to bounce back and end the negative streak that he had going on. The Mexican driver finished P4,
0.053 seconds behind Aston Martin of Fernando Alonso.
The Mexican driver extended his gap in the Championship on third
Lewis Hamilton to 32 points and is in a more comfortable position going into the remaining two races of the season.
On the other hand, the 33-year-old still lacks a lot of pace on his teammate
Max Verstappen. Former F1 driver Timo Glock shared his opinion on why Perez can't keep up with the Dutchman.
As quoted by
PlanetF1, he said: "
The reason why Checo [Perez] can’t keep up with Max, I think it’s mental, at some point."
The problem might have been that Perez wanted to challenge Verstappen for the title after the first three races of the season, but his confidence was then ruined by the supreme performances of the three-time World Champion.
"When he’s sort of realized it doesn’t matter what he does. ‘I just have no chance against Max at the moment,’ and he tried harder and harder and harder, and that led to mistakes."
Perez slid into a kind of negative spiral, as Glock describes it, after the 2023
Italian Grand Prix and has not stood on the podium since then.
"That brings you into that sort of negative spiral which pulls you down, and everything that you try to do doesn’t work out."
Verstappen, on the other hand, has been winning every single race, with the exception of the
Singapore Grand Prix, where the Red Bull car did not perform as well.
"On the other side then, this guy just wins every race, being on pole all the time and, again, you can do whatever you want, you just can’t beat him."
Perez has been confirmed to race for Red Bull Racing in the 2024 season, but the main challenge that awaits him according to Glock, is how he mentally deals with the pressure.
"That puts you down mentally in the end, and I think that’s the main problem at the moment for Checo."
