Former F1 driver and analyst for Formula 1's official website, Jolyon Palmer, asserted that
Mercedes could again win the first race of the season in Barcelona.
The
Spanish Grand Prix, which takes place on June 23, follows a one-week break following the Canadian Grand Prix, where Mercedes surprised everyone with its pace.
Silver Arrows have spent the majority of the nine race weekends of the 2024 season so far in no man's land, in P4 in the Championship, a decent chunk away from the podium fight.
However, the German team introduced upgrades in Canada that seemed to have eliminated their problems,
allowing them to compete for the podium and even victory.
Mercedes could even get their first win of the season in Montreal. George Russell started from pole and was in the best position to cross the finish line in P1, but he made too many mistakes, which cost him two positions.
Feelings inside Mercedes's garage were a bit mixed after Canada because, on the one hand, the team took a significant step forward. But on the other hand, they passed on the opportunity to score the victory, which felt within reach.
Going into the Spanish Grand Prix, though, Jolyon Palmer believes the German team can feel pretty confident.
Writing in his column for www.formula1.com, he said:
"With a little more composure from George or more qualifying pace from Lewis, that first win of 2024 could be within reach for either of them."
Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya is place which tends to suit Mercedes pretty well. They scored the best result of the 2023 season here with P2 and P3, and will surely be looking to at least repeat this feat this year.
