The triple World Champion Max Verstappen hinted in a recent interview he won't be competing in Formula One as a 36-year-old.
Max Verstappen is currently 26 and incredibly, he has already finished his ninth season in Formula One. Even though he is only 26 year old, the Dutchman already achieved significant success in the sport.
In 2023, he won his third consecutive Drivers' World Championship title and broke numerous single-season records, some of them even 70 years old.
The Dutchman is currently with the most dominant team on the grid, and it seems he has a very high chance of adding fourth and fifth consecutive titles. By doing so, he would break the World record for the most consecutive titles in F1, now held by Sebastian Vettel (4).
If there is a driver currently in F1 that could break all records of the seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton for the most points scored, most pole positions, most wins, and most titles, it would be Verstappen.
However, the 26-year-old shared he does not plan to stay around in Formula One for too long. Asked by Blick what he thought would be different in F1 in about ten years, Verstappen responded:
"The gas will probably be gone. But our sport is already becoming greener and more sustainable. Only one thing is certain: Max Verstappen will no longer be there!"
The Dutchman mentioned in the past he does not like the direction F1 is taking by focusing more on the show than the racing spectacle side of the sport and suggested it might be one of the reasons he will leave sooner or later.
The three-time World Champion also plans to establish his own GT series team and compete in championships and races like 24 Hours of Le Mans one day, and these goals might also encourage his decision to leave F1.
Verstappen is currently contracted with Red Bull until the end of the season 2028, but whether he will stay in the sport after that remains a question.
