AlphaTauri team principal
Franz Tost told reporters in Mexico City he expects to see
Liam Lawson in the seat of a Formula One car by 2025.
Liam Lawson got his chance to drive for Alphatauri after
Daniel Ricciardo's unfortunate injury during the
Dutch Grand Prix free practice session.
The rookie driver jumped into the AlphaTauri at one of the toughest circuits in one of the toughest conditions and beat his teammate
Yuki Tsunoda right away in his first race.
Lawson beat his teammate in four of five races that he raced for AlphaTauri. His team principal, Franz Tost, seemed amazed with his performances as he told reporters in Mexico City:
"Liam did a fantastic job with us, because we must not forget the circumstances when he, the first time, drove in Zandvoort for us – he wasn’t prepared for this."
The Zandvoort race was particularly challenging. The circuit was hit by torrential rains a few times during the race, so drivers had to adjust to the changing conditions constantly.
"He just had to jump into the car. It was raining, he had to use full wet tyres. He was never in a Formula 1 car with full wet tyres and also not with intermediates, and he did everything without any mistake and he showed a good race performance in Zandvoort."
Throughout his five races in AlphaTauri, Lawson also managed to score what was then season's best result for the team when he finished ninth in
Singapore.
"I think his highlight with us was in Singapore when he finished on the ninth position. Singapore is not an easy track."
While AlphaTauri decided to give the next season's contract to more experienced drivers, Tost predicts to see Liam Lawson in Formula One at least in 2025.
"He was competitive from the very beginning onwards, no mistake, nothing and he deserves a seat in Formula 1 and I expect him, at least in 2025, to be in Formula 1."
