Jenson Button recently brought up one self-inflicted flaw that hurts
Lando Norris's performance.
Lando Norris has been identified as one of the
best drivers after the 2023 season by both team principals and other drivers. With a faster
McLaren, he has shown impressive speed and tire management skills.
Formula One World Champion Jenson Button said in a recent interview with Sky Sports he believes the British driver to be an extreme talent which was obvious ever since his first practice session.
"Lando is an extreme talent, he really is. I’ve watched him since the first time he turned an F1 steering wheel, which was in Hungary, because I was racing for the team at the time. And it’s amazing how quickly he got to grips with it."
On the other hand, the former F1 driver suggested the 24-year-old has a problem with extremely critical self-reflection. Button believes it hurts Norris.
"But also, he’s a real thinker, and sometimes that hurts him because he looks at himself too much and worries that he’s not good enough. But he is."
Nico Rosberg has suggested something similar throughout the season when
he said he could spot signs of mental struggle in the McLaren driver.
Despite his incredible speed and talent, Norris has been quite unlucky so far and is still missing a Grand Prix victory. Button said he can't wait to see the first win, but it will be very challenging.
"He’s exceptional and I can’t wait to see him in equipment that can fight for victories. It’s tough with the way that it is, with having such a dominant driver, team, that only one guy can win."
Max Verstappen has completely dominated the most recent season, and it remains a question if any of the teams can close the gap to
Red Bull in the upcoming two seasons.
Button thinks there is a chance we might see somebody bring the challenge to Red Bull. He brought up the
Mercedes 2021 example as he added:
"We’ve seen it change with Mercedes. I didn’t think anyone was going to beat them in the next 10 years. But they did. Red Bull came in and they’ve beaten them. So it happens."
