Lando Norris recently addressed his one trait that gets various responses from people after many race weekends.
McLaren F1 driver Lando Norris showed in 2023 that he belongs to one of the best drivers on the grid. Even team principals recognized his talent as they ranked him as the third-best driver after the 2023 season.
On the other hand, Norris's most recent season has not been perfect, and the British driver made multiple mistakes on multiple occasions, particularly in qualifying sessions.
The 24-year-old would then always beat himself up in interviews with the media, saying things like "I’m so s**t sometimes." Norris recently explained why he says things like that. He told motorsport.com:
"I get annoyed with myself on Saturdays at times, and people are like, ‘you shouldn’t beat yourself up’ and all of that stuff, a lot of my best performances come then on that next day."
Many people view the McLaren driver's self-criticism as a bad thing. Former F1 World Champion Nico Rosberg said he saw signs of mental struggles in Norris and suggested he should limit the self-criticism. However, the 24-year-old does not see it as a problem:
"And it doesn’t effect me when I go and drive the next day, because I’m like, ‘oh I still just messed up Saturday. Just because I say it and things, it doesn’t mean that. And I think a lot of people have different opinions on it, but I’ve always been that way."
Norris explained he does not criticize himself on purpose. It is rather something that comes to him naturally, and he has always done it ever since the start of his career.
"Since karting, I’ve always been like that. It’s the way I got brought up and it’s the way I’ve developed into being the driver that I am today."
Every driver has a different way of coping with bad performances. Some do not need to say anything, and some, like Lando Norris, just need to let their thoughts out of their system, which then helps them in upcoming races. He added:
"And I think all of those races genuinely were… actually turned out to be some of my better races!"
