Former owner of the Jordan Grand Prix F1 team, Eddie Jordan, pinpointed a sign that suggests
Fernando Alonso might be about to retire.
Fernando Alonso is currently the oldest driver on the grid.
On July 29, he will turn 43. To put his age into perspective, Alonso has completed more seasons in F1 than Oliver Bearman has completed years in his life, and they raced against each other during the second race of the 2024 season.
Despite being so old, the Spanish Matador keeps showing that he deserves a place on the Formula 1 grid. He has incredible results and
constantly outperforms his teammate Lance Stroll.
However, with his increasing age, many people keep asking how long he can keep on racing. In a recent episode of the Formula for Success podcast, Eddie Jordan pointed out a sign that in his mind suggests Alonso might be about to retire.
"He is a World Champion. I'm critical of his odd management skills or the people who manage him because he should have won at least four or five World Championships in my view, because he's that talented."
"And I just feel now he's probably calculating. He's bought a new boat, that's often an indication to me because I know you [Coulthard] bought a boat at the time and then retired gracefully after that, and I did the same."
On the one hand, Alonso
suggested he could keep racing, maybe even until he reached 50. On the other hand, the Spaniard has been saying he needs to wait for a few more races this season to decide whteher he actually wants to continue.
Aston Martin clearly said they are interested in having Alonso as part of their lineup beyond the 2024 season. The 42-year-old could maybe even get a seat in
Mercedes, but as of now, it isn't clear whether he wants to continue. Jordan added:
"People have a habit of buying boats and retiring. So let's see what happens. But Fernando should be in Formula 1, he's such an exciting driver. And as long as he wants to do it, then there's always a place there in my heart for him."
