Former team principal of Haas Formula One team, Guenther Steiner, answered the question of which one of his two drivers he thinks is the best.
Nico Hulkenberg and Kevin Magnussen had a really challenging season in 2023. They struggled with a car that did not have the race pace, and therefore, it was almost impossible for them to score points.
Altogether, the two Haas F1 drivers scored 12 points throughout the 28 races (including Sprint Races) of the season 2023, but even the World Champion suggested it wasn't their fault.
Max Verstappen suggested a car that works well with tires is essential for success in F1. In his more blunt way of putting things, he added he didn't think Hulkenberg or Magnussen were "idiots."
The German driver stated he wasn't happy with the results, but he knew he maximized what his car offered him. He said he had some very strong performances, but they did not grab headlines because he finished outside of the top 10, unfortunately.
Overall, the season was very difficult for Haas drivers. Asked to compare them and say who is the best of the pairing, Guenther Steiner said at Autosport International:
"Have you got a sister and a brother? If I was asked you who do you like better? That’s the same thing I’d reply."
On one hand, Hulkenberg showed a better pace in most of the qualifying sessions in comparison to his teammate and collected more points overall. On the other hand, the former team principal believes Magnussen would be better if given a stronger car. Steiner added:
"I think they’re both good drivers, Nico obviously showed last year that in qualifying I think he’s one of the best in Formula 1. If you give Kevin a good car and he starts fighting, he will be there."
