Former F1 team owner Eddie Jordan discussed
Lewis Hamilton's prospects of winning the title once he leaves
Mercedes at the end of 2024.
As you must have heard, the
seven-time World Champion will be leaving Mercedes at the end of this season to join
Charles Leclerc in
Ferrari starting from 2025.
At the moment, Ferrari looks to be on the right trajectory to have a title-contending car next year. However, even if they did, many fans doubt Hamilton's ability to secure first place in the Championship at the age of 40 (he turns 40 in January next year).
Leclerc is much younger (26 years old) and considered a future World Champion in the making. In fact, he has beaten another World Champion-
Sebastian Vettel, twice as his teammate.
While it certainly won't be an easy comparison for the current Mercedes driver, Eddie Jordan asserted he believes Hamilton still has a very decent chance of winning the title. He said on the Formula for Success podcast:
"Certainly, for next year (2025), the new rules will not be in place. So, he will effectively be driving what is the car that he has got, that is there this year."
"I think, at 39 that Lewis, when he gets himself with red overalls, just like when he left McLaren and he went to Mercedes, it was just like fireworks."
The fact that the 2025 season will be under the same regulations means that we should not expect any drastic changes in the pecking order.
So if Ferrari and
McLaren are able to catch up with
Red Bull this year, it might be a super exciting fight between three teams for the World Championship.
This means it would be an open battle between six incredibly talented drivers. Hamilton has arguably the most experience out of these six drivers, and Jordan added that he sees the
39-year-old as a "serious contender" for the title.
"I think that Lewis will be a serious contender for the championship, and I promise you, he will give it an all mighty crack next year; before 2026, anything can happen."
