Mercedes driver
Lewis Hamilton talked about what has been the most painful thing about this year's season so far.
At the start of this year, the seven-time World Champion made one of the toughest decisions in his career- to depart Mercedes at the end of the 2024 season and join their rival team,
Scuderia Ferrari.
It is unusual for drivers and teams to make such decisions so early (with one entire season still to go) or to announce them so early, but knowing that this year would be his last season with Silver Arrows, Hamilton naturally wanted to make the most of it.
The 39-year-old and his team had an event in New York City ahead of the 2024
Miami Grand Prix, after which he did an interview for CBS News. Asked whether he wanted 2024 to be his best season, he replied:
"I do and that's probably the most painful part. Everyone at the team, they want it to be a great year. Everyone has worked so hard back."
The British driver admitted that some people in his team supported him in his decision to
follow his dream and join Ferrari, and some,
on the other hand, took it a bit worse.
Moreover, this season hasn't been going particularly according to his and Mercedes's expectations, so it has been quite an emotional journey during the first six race weekends so far.
"For me, this whole journey has been massively emotional. Just because I have so much love for this team. I'm not leaving because I'm unhappy there."
"I'm not leaving because of relationship issues. Mercedes have supported me since I was 13. They've been with me through thick and thin. So, it's definitely a strange transition at the moment."
Looking at the positive side, the seven-time World Champion has something to look forward to as Ferrari, which he will be joining next year, seems to be doing much better.
