Formula 1 World Champion Damon Hill shared a shocking prediction for the result of the first race of the season - the 2024
Bahrain Grand Prix.
F1 drivers' reactions after the pre-season testing suggest everyone expects
Red Bull to start this season at the front with a significant pace advantage.
Consequently, it is generally expected that Red Bull will have the upper hand on everyone during the race, which takes place at
Bahrain International Circuit in just a few days.
However, former F1 driver and World Champion Damon Hill doesn't share this view. As reported by
f1oversteer.com, the 63-year-old said:
"My podium for the Bahrain Grand Prix, the opening race of the 2024 season, is as follows. In reverse order, Fernando Alonso and then the next is going to be Checo Perez."
Fernando Alonso in third place and
Sergio Perez in second place is actually the exact same order that we saw last season. However, when it came to saying who would win the race, Hill said:
"And then the winner is going to be, a totally stunned world is going to see…Lewis [Hamilton] is going to win it, and that's because both Red Bulls have sprung a leak, and they've overheated or got some sort of technical problem they didn't realize was going to happen."
The reason why it might make sense for Hill to predict a problem for Red Bull is that the team from Milton Keynes introduced a completely new concept of a car this year.
It has much higher potential on paper, but many risks are associated with building a different car from what the team was working on within the last two years.
Also, from what Hill predicted, it seems that he expects
Mercedes and
Aston Martin to be equally matched and ahead of
Ferrari and
McLaren. He added:
"And that’s not wishful thinking, I just think we’re going to get a surprise result at least I hope!"
