The 2009 F1 Champion Jenson Button said that Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell stand out the most amongst other pairings on the grid.

F1 fans and experts often debate which drivers or driver pairings are the strongest on the grid. Obviously, it isn't always very straightforward to assess because all the F1 teams have different cars.

Most accurate comparisons can be made between teammates. However, people still like to have their own opinions and say on who is the best.

Red Bull's motorsport advisor Helmut Marko recently made quite a shocking statement when he said it's not his team that has the best driver duo.

Instead, the 81-year-old suggested McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri are the ones which he deems the best pairing. Former F1 driver Jenson Button shared his opinion on the most recent episode of the Sky F1 Podcast:

"I have to say that Mercedes’ [driver line-up] is really strong. Having Lewis [and] George, who’s been performing extremely well, that is a real strong driver pair."
"But people will go, 'What about this driver pair? What about this driver pair?' Yeah, we're all going to have different opinions, and those are the two that stand out because I know how good Lewis is."

Jenson Button raced Lewis Hamilton as his teammate in three seasons from 2010 to 2012. In this period, Lewis Hamilton scored ten victories and earned 657 points, while the 44-year-old scored eight victories and earned 672 points.

Overall, Hamilton just managed to beat Button 2-1 with a better finishing position at the end of 2010 and 2012. Having driven against the seven-time World Champion in equal machinery, the 2009 Champion added he has a great appreciation for what George Russell is doing at the moment as well.

"I've experienced it many times over and over again. For George to be that competitive up against someone like Lewis, it's extremely impressive."
