Pierre Gasly shared his thoughts on a terrible race at Las Vegas Strip Circuit after finishing in 11th place, just outside of points.
Two sides of the Alpine garage went in the complete opposite direction this weekend. While Esteban Ocon struggled in qualification and Pierre Gasly had a fantastic result, the roles reversed for the race.
Unlike Ocon, who started from P16 and ended in P4, Gasly did not have a delightful race as he started from the fourth place on the grid but gradually fell down the order into P11. The number 10 driver told the media after the race:
"There are quite a few things that were going on, but I think the main thing was after five/six laps I grained the Hard tyre and from there on I just never recovered."
The most annoying thing for the Frenchman will be that he saw his teammate pull off the one-stop strategy, meaning, there was no problem in the Alpine car.
"It was just a very painful, long last 25 laps. Frustrating because the start was great, starting in the right train behind George and Charles not too far away."
Gasly had an opportunity to maybe score a podium for his team this weekend with such a great starting position, but he could not get the hard compound tires to work, and that cost him everything.
"I knew there was a big opportunity on the table, but then after on that Hard tire, it was just pretty much a nightmare."
The Ferrari F1 driver Charles Leclerc described it was really challenging for him to keep heat in his hard compound tires under the safety car and that might have been a reason that allowed Max Verstappen to overtake him for the race lead.
It seems like the Alpine driver could have been suffering from a similar issue, but unlike Leclerc, he could not recover from it and only kept falling down the grid.
"I don't know if it was with the Safety Car; the tires get cold, you start pushing on a very cold compound. So we need to review, I don't fully understand why I struggled so much on my car."
